Understanding your VA disability compensation and how to file a claim.
The VA rates disabilities from 0% to 100% in 10% increments based on how much the condition affects your ability to work and function. Multiple ratings are combined using a formula (not simply added). Combined ratings are rounded to the nearest 10%.
30% or higher: Monthly compensation payment. 50% or higher: Commissary and exchange access. 100% P&T: Full benefits including CHAMPVA for dependents, free VA healthcare, property tax exemptions in many states. 60%+ unemployable: TDIU may provide 100% pay rate.
File online at VA.gov, by mail, or in person at a VA regional office. You'll need service records, medical records documenting your condition, and a nexus letter from your doctor connecting the condition to service. Consider working with an accredited VSO (Veterans Service Organization) — it's free.
If your claim is denied or you disagree with the rating, you have 1 year to appeal. Options include: Supplemental Claim (new evidence), Higher-Level Review (senior reviewer), or Board of Veterans Appeals. The process can take months to years — document everything.
